Hoan Kiem Lake

Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as the Lake of the Returned Sword, is a central feature of Hanoi, offering a peaceful respite from the bustling city surrounding it. Located within the historical Old Quarter, the lake is a focal point for local residents and tourists alike, embodying the spirit and history of the city. The name “Hoan Kiem” comes from a legend involving Emperor Le Loi, who is said to have received a magical sword from the gods, which he used to drive out invading Chinese forces, and later returned it to a giant golden turtle in this very lake.

The lake is not just a scenic spot but also a cultural hub, surrounded by important city landmarks and numerous activities. On its northern shore stands the iconic Tortoise Tower, sitting on a small island and symbolizing the legend of the magical sword. Another notable islet linked by a picturesque red bridge, The Huc Bridge, leads to Ngoc Son Temple, dedicated to a 13th-century military leader among other venerable figures. Early mornings and late afternoons at Hoan Kiem Lake are particularly lively with locals practicing Tai Chi and aerobics, while evenings bring families and friends together to enjoy the cool air and serene environment.
